As the global decline in bee populations continues to raise concerns, understanding bee behavior through non-intrusive monitoring has never been more important. To support this goal, SenzAgro’s BeeSenz system was recently deployed in Madduvil, where a series of control experiments were carried out to test the device’s performance under real-world hive conditions.

This article outlines how BeeSenz was used to capture bee sound patterns under various scenarios, and how these recordings are helping improve AI models that decode the language of the hive.

The primary objective of this deployment was to evaluate the functionality and reliability of BeeSenz’s sound capturing system in different controlled conditions. This helped test its potential for detecting behavioral cues such as stress, environmental changes, queen presence, and hive population levels.

5. Recording in a fully populated hive (~75%)

 This test helped capture the dense buzz of a thriving colony, critical for identifying healthy hive activity profiles.

Results were received according to the different audio captures as per the different methods used. Figure 07, indicates that the audio results of the beehive with queen bee (FFT), while figure 08, indicates the audio results of the beehive without queen bee (FFT). Moreover the other methods of audio recordings during human-induced hive disturbance, in a fully populated hive (~75%), and in a less populated hive (~30%) were also captured as follows.

The Madduvil deployment marks a key milestone in the development of AI-powered beekeeping tools. By carefully controlling and testing the BeeSenz system across various hive conditions, the team has begun building a sound library essential for training machine learning models that can one day detect hive stress, queen presence, or health anomalies automatically.
